Ok, Republicans may not be idiots, but they're not that smart

So the special election in NY district 23 is heating up. Dede Scozzafava (RINO) is running against Bill Owens (D) for the seat. Scozzafava has been endorsed by the NRCC and the GOP elite, but they've ignored the actual conservative in the race, Doug Hoffman.

There are many op-eds and strategems afloat about the tactical mistake this is, Mark Steyn has but one:
...Washington doesn't need another incoherent buffoon insulated by a phalanx of thin-skinned twerps already guarding her like a 30-year incumbent for whom routine questions are an outrageous form of lèse-majesté. By any reasonable measure, this candidate is unworthy of a seat in the national legislature.
And all of this drama in a safe Republican district.

Yet another reason why I don't enthusiastically support the Republican party any more.

UPDATED: Ace of Spades also quoted this interview with a Republican party county chair:
Joseph adamantly refused to call for Scozzafava to withdraw from the race. "That would just be affirming Conservative Party Chariman Mike Long's position. What are we going to do? Let him tell us who we should nominate?"

Might not be such a bad idea, considering how badly you've fucked it up on your own.
