Cautionary tale (w/update)

Meleanie Hain was found shot to death on Wednesday, along with her estranged husband, in what is an apparent murder-suicide. Her children were reported to be running down the street claiming 'Daddy shot Mommy!'.

Meleanie Hain, if you're not familiar with the name, is the women who caused quite a stir when she openly carried her handgun to her daughter's soccer game. Of course, the media reported mass hysteria, but the reality was that this was a common thing for her to do. She had a concealed carry permit, but as a Pennsylvania resident, she needed no permit to carry openly. Never the less, the police chief yanked her carry permit (which, ironically, left her with nothing but - open carry) without due cause, and a judge later returned it to her. She was in the process of sueing the police chief when she was killed.

She was interviewed at Gun Nuts Radio in January, and she appeared to be entirely rational. But as other bloggers have pointed out, just being armed isn't magic ...... it can only even the odds. There is no guarantee that you'll survive a defensive encounter.
