What now?

There's been another shooting, this time in FL:

Julie Schenecker, 50, a military officer's wife, was arrested Friday when police, responding to call from a concerned relative, found her covered in blood on the back porch of her home.

The woman allegedly confessed to the officers there that she had shot her 13-year-old son and then her 16-year-old daughter because they were "mouthy."

Now, you probably won't hear nearly as much about this shooting as you've heard about the Tuscon massacre, and I'll try to go over some of the reasons (as I see them).

1. Only two victims - there's no need for the usual suspects to pull out their hip-waders for a blood dance involving just a couple of mouthy kids.

2. No evil 'assault' pistols used - the mom used a garden-variety .38 revolver (we can only guess about this, since the MFM consistently gets firearms wrong) with 6 shots. That fits well within the 10-shot limit the anti-gun bigots would saddle us with.

3. Law-abiding citizen legally purchased the handgun - no outward signs there was anything wrong here.

4. This incident doesn't fit the MFM narrative.

Listen close ... this is all you'll hear about these two senseless deaths. Two deaths that just don't count to the anti-gun bigots.

Is any of this worth it?

I've been in a funk for a while; the Affliction acting up, the whole family is sick, more medical challenges for Le Petite Poulet. Not to mention the whole gun issue.

Then I see this thread on Sebastian's site, and I wonder how much longer I can pay attention. It all seems so pointless. Gunnies arguing about what this means or that means; should we like the Republicans or not? Should we like the Democrats or not? What should we do?

If you really knew me, you might think I'm kinda fatalistic ... I'm not. I realize there are things that happen about which we can do nothing. Kids drown in 5 gal buckets. Little old ladies are hit by drunk drivers.

And citizens are attacked by lunatics with firearms. And legislators feel the need to 'do something', even if it won't help the actual problem, because it won't.

And we don't have any organization who will stand up and fight for our civil rights, and by that, I mean really fight. Like get in the face of John Boehner and tell him that any, any capitulation with the forces of evil will result in a prompt primary challenge and Boehner can forget about receiving help or support unless firearm freedoms start coming back instead of going away.

But we don't have an organization like that, and we never have. The NRA threw class 3 owners fully under the bus in 1934, and they continue to this day to ignore them (and then wonder why they get no respect from class 3 owners). The NRA, the 800 lb Yorky, still hasn't gotten anything done with MA ... or NJ ... or IL ... or CA. Even after Heller and McDonald have given us tools to use to leverage against hoplophobes.

The ATF is our enemy, but the NRA doesn't agree. The NRA believes that we can tweak the law and make the ATF kinder and gentler. This is because the NRA wants to keep it's seat at the table; it wants to stay on the invitation lists of all the right parties. It wants to keep problems going because that's how they continue to raise funds. It is now in their interest to make sure that nothing is ever solved in the gun rights arena.

I want to see freedom restored to America. I want to see responsibility and accountability restored to America. And I want to see groups advocate for firearms rights, and advocating for keeps.

This is gun contrtol ...

... as administered by the FCC:

As many people know, during the recent American Library Association national convention, the FCC released a statement declaring their intent to ban the import of specific books into the United States. The new ruling is to be similar to bans in the Weimar Republic back in the 1930’s. The law looks to target certain books based on the number of foreign words or pages in them and while not naming Manga comics directly, it has indicated that books that serve no ‘entertainment purposes’ would not be permitted into the states.

Same shit, different day ... the War on (some) Drugs:

When Neil Brown got high on dangerous chemicals sold as bath salts, he took his skinning knife and slit his face and stomach repeatedly. Brown survived, but authorities say others haven't been so lucky after snorting, injecting or smoking powders with such innocuous-sounding names as Ivory Wave, Red Dove and Vanilla Sky.

Some say the effects of the powders are as powerful as abusing methamphetamine. Increasingly, law enforcement agents and poison control centers say the advertised bath salts with complex chemical names are an emerging menace in several U.S. states where authorities talk of banning their sale.

How about we just let idiots be idiots and kill themselves, huh?

Man wounds 4 officers at police station before he's shot to death:

A female sergeant in a hallway was hit first. Commander Brian Davis raced out of his office, exchanged fire with the gunman and got shot in the back.

Then the gunman rushed the horseshoe-shaped front desk with his pistol grip shotgun. Sgt. Ray Saati and Officer David Anderson also were shot before the gunman was killed.

Livin' in condition white, no doubt ... 'cuz no one in their right mind would attack a police station, right?

Interesting that the gunman used a shotgun, and not a high-capacity magazine-equipped semiautomatic assault pistol/weapon/icky gun thing.

Wonder how many rounds the po-po expended ... more than 10?

pm

Finally ...

Someone in the (more) major media notices:

The death of a U.S. Border Patrol agent north of Nogales, Ariz., on December 14, 2010 might turn out to be the death knell for the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, or ATF.

Allegations have surfaced suggesting that one of the guns used by Mexican bandits during the firefight in which Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was killed might have been smuggled into Mexico with the knowing assistance of ATF officials. If these allegations prove to be true, it is quite possible that the long troubled agency could be dismantled. Even if there proves to be no connection with Agent Terry's death, the scrutiny generated by an investigation could crash the agency.

I think Jeff is a bit myopic if he thinks that this could result in the dismantling of the ATF ... that would depend on whether or not congress takes any aggressive action (and more importantly, whether other agencies would take the displaced agents).

Still, it's a start ... contact your legislators.

And that stupid 'It only takes one shot' bint? Tell that to Gabrielle Giffords, who has survived a through-and-through head wound from a range of less than 5 feet.

Dumbass.

Update: Since some of these useful idiots seem to believe the movie hype, here's something for them to consider. Back in 1966, Daniel Boone was starting it's third season, and the episode entitled The Enchanted Gun dispels the notion of the firearm as magical talisman against evil. In it, Daniel gives his rifle to an Indian brave, then sets out to prove that the gun is not enchanted by making the brave miss (several times) while hunting Boone.

Here's a thought ...

I'm not sure if I've blogged about this before, so I'll try now.

I'm a bit miffed (to the extent that I care one way or the other) about the fact that certain states and their primaries have an inordinate effect on which candidate is chosen. In Iowa, you can preach most anything except ending corn subsidies. Such crazy talk will get you run out of town, and out of contention. This is just an example.

So let's try this ... of course, it would take the national party getting involved and setting up some rules, so there's the problem right there.

Arrange the dates of the primaries such that the first primary is held in the state with the highest percentage of Republicans (or Democrats) in state-wide and national office, including the governor. Now you'd get fewer squishes, at least on the Republican side.

And it'd make those squishy independents pick a side.

Another whiney bitch

In Chattanooga, seems the Fraternal Order of Police are pissed:

At a time when police officers are being asked to pay mileage costs to drive city cars home and back, our first report showed how top-paid city employees did not have their $400-a-month car allowance taken away, as the Mayor said would happen, but quietly moved to a $4,800 a year salary increase.

Craig Joel (whiney bitch) who is the vice president of the local FOP, is outraged ... outraged I say ... that 6 (six) judges and high-level city officials are still getting their take-home cars.

6 ... $28,800.00 a year.

Sounds like a lot, don't it.

Until you weigh that against the $1.5 million that it costs Chattanooga to allow police officers to take their cars home. $1.5 million that the city doesn't have.

Mr Joel doesn't give a fuck about whether other top government officials are getting perks or not ... he only cares that he and his fellow FOP'ers aren't getting their perks.

I'm sure all the inmates in prison will treat the sheriff with the utmost respect.

What do they want?

Sebastian (and others) are thinking about the 'common ground' thing, and noticing that there pretty much isn't any:

I’ve been thinking more lately about common ground in this debate, and why there’s none to be found. Chiefly I’ve been thinking about an idea that would, in theory, address a lot of concerns on both sides. But this, like many other ideas I’ve had, can probably be filed under politically infeasible. I’ve wondered why we don’t, instead of continually fighting over turning the ratchet up on down on who or who isn’t a prohibited person, we compromise, and put a bit more faith in social pressure instead of law?

And there's much more.

First, I think Uncle has it down cold that sometimes the best thing to do is tell anti-gunners to "fuck right off". Word.

Second, has anyone in the anti-gun movement (who agrees to say anything at all) been asked 'What is your end game? At what point will you go away?'

No magazines over 5 rounds? No semi-auto handguns? No military-pattern rifles? No semi-auto rifles?

No firearms at all?

I'm perfectly happy to tell anyone who wants to know how far I want things to go - no restrictions of any kind. None.

And until I know how far the anti-gun forces want to go, there can't be any common ground.

pm

Here's what I find offensive ...

... about the current state of government vs firearms rights:

When officers arrived on the scene, they detected an odor of alcohol from Gustaveson. Jensen says after the test she was placed into custody.

Officers then searched the school bus and found a firearm which belonged to Gustaveson, who has a concealed weapons permit.

This regarding a school bus driver found to be intoxicated, and having a firearm.

Now, I can see charging her with DUI since she was intoxicated, and she had had children on her bus that morning.

But the firearms charges are a little more challenging. Since she didn't do anything illegal with the firearm (and by 'do' I mean brandish, threaten or shoot anyone) I take exception to her being charged with anything. Regarding her having the firearm on the bus, one would have to look at state law regarding permit-holders having firearms on school property, and whether anything prohibited her from having the firearm on the bus while carting kids around.

Just having a firearm, even while intoxicated, doesn't trip my trigger.

You're allowed to exercise 1st amendment rights while intoxicated, aren't you?

You don't forfeit your 4th amendment rights if you're a bit tipsy, do you?

Just because you've imbibed a bit, you're still allowed certain constitutional guarantees ...

Unless you want to have a firearm with you.

For the record, I probably wouldn't convict.

More musings ....

Vox Day looks at violence against government:

Government is founded upon violence, which is why the Founding Fathers, who quite clearly believed that violence against the government was justified, also believed it was vitally important to limit government very strictly. And it is why no one who believes that violence against the government is never justified should be permitted to vote in America, hold political office, or work as government employee. It is an intellectual position that is about as fundamentally un-American as it is possible to hold.

What he said ... too bad there hasn't been nearly enough of it.

pm

Mal Reynolds said it best ...

... That's what governments are for - to get in a man's way:

Bobby and Amanda Herring spent more than a year providing food to homeless people in downtown Houston every day. They fed them, left behind no trash and doled out warm meals peacefully without a single crime being committed, Bobby Herring said.

That ended two weeks ago when the city shut down their "Feed a Friend" effort for lack of a permit. And city officials say the couple most likely will not be able to obtain one.

Anyone serving food for public consumption, whether for the homeless or for sale, must have a permit, said Kathy Barton, a spokeswoman for the Health and Human Services Department. To get that permit, the food must be prepared in a certified kitchen with a certified food manager.

I wonder if all of those soup kitchens during the depression were certified ...

This begs a question

Whether or not citizens can engage in pre-emptive deadly force:

As previously reported by WND, the former staff member testified in an affidavit that TiZA executive director Asad Zaman told her, "We could just kill you, yeah tell your husband we'll do his job for him." In his own affidavit, Zaman said he didn't remember making the statement.
This regarding lawsuits involving a muslim charter school and the allegations of witness intimidation.

Now, I read an article by Masaad Ayoob many years ago that had a bit on the levels of force, and one of the levels was pre-emptive. The example he gave was a hostage situation where one hostage has been killed, and another promised to be killed in 5 minutes if demands aren't met. That's when police are authorized to shoot if the opportunity presents itself.

But what about when someone threatens to kill you? Do you have to wait until they show ability and opportunity before you act, or can you take steps beforehand to squash the threat?

Just wondering ...

A new legislative proposal would declare that the state's local county sheriffs are the pre-eminent law enforcement authority in their jurisdictions, and federal agents such as those working for the Internal Revenue Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and others, would be required to get permission from them before they could take any action.

I welcome my new right-wing overlords ...

... because he is me:

Jared Loughner proves that, in fact, by not proving it. Loughner clearly was not watching Glen Beck or listening to Rush Limbaugh or reading Sarah Palin's tweets. We know this for a fact. The leftist media even admits this, sometimes, when they have no other good options.

But that just proves that our provocations are even more dangerous. For if such provocations tilted the mind of a right-leaning politically-involved sort of Category 3 person, well, that's the paradigmatic situation you're looking for to prove your thesis. In that sort of situation, you'd have the proof you were looking for.

But -- follow the leftist logic here -- Loughner is not a Tea Partier, or a conservative, or even right leaning at all. This proves that not only can our provocations influence our own crazies (which is 60% of us, to hear them talk) but in fact are so potent they can even drive those who don't listen to us to kill.

Do you see that next argument taking shape? Taking shape? Having taken shape, I should say, past perfect. Krugman and all the rest of them, having called this as a deranged right-winger (and been proven wrong) simply make their argument more all-encompassing. They're no longer arguing that right-wing invective can have an unbalanacing effect on right-wingers who hear it.

Their new argument is that right-wing invective can have an unbalancing effect on non-right-wingers -- left-wingers, even -- who don't hear it.

Admittedly, this post by Ace is loooong (try to keep the TLDR at bay), but it's kinda important.

A woman was taken to Erlanger hospital Tuesday after being hit on the nose with a jar at the Walmart near Eastgate Town Center in Chattanooga.

Police found that two other shoppers, Gerald Parham Jr. and Timothy Keith, had gotten into an argument and that Keith threw the jar at Parham but hit Brown.Link

I thought you couldn't hurt anyone with a jar of salsa?

Worth a look

VA doesn't have a sense of humor!

Wow ... just, wow!

The religion of peace strikes again!

You heard it here ...

... first:

Talking with a good friend last night, we agreed that the evil dwarf Janet the Second, aka "Big Sis," would likely shortly be replaced at DHS for serial incompetence. "Who do you think will replace her?" he asked.

My money is on this guy, if he wants the job: Meet Ray Kelly.

Mike's been pretty accurate with his predictions.

It's time

Someone needs to be charged with violations of USC 18, sec 241:

The University of Utah has created a secret policy whereby its police officers are instructed in how to harass and intimidate law abiding gun owners by trumping up non-gun charges for perfectly lawful conduct. This policy violates both the letter and spirit of State Law and binding State Supreme Court ruling. Keeping such a policy secret violates sound notions of openness and transparency in government.

Since the university has already been admonished for it's illegal behavior, it's time to take off the gloves and start pushing the feds to start throwing some high-level folks in jail.

In. Jail.

How hard is it?

This is tragic ...

... on so many levels:

A 10-year-old Ohio boy was charged with murder today for allegedly shooting his mother with a .22 caliber rifle
.
Happened over the weekend, news is just catching up. Since it has to do with guns, expect the PSH to start any time.

Because the media's involved, expect to never get the full story unless someone has an in to the police department. The ABC story I saw yesterday morning noted that the boy had firearms in his room (and the story showed lots of long guns mounted on a wall, unlocked). Given that the younster had bouts of discipline problems (as reported), his having access to firearms probably wasn't a good idea.

Firearms advocates don't think youngsters should automatically be denied the use of firearms under supervision; firearms advocates believe that one should at least demonstrate a healthy dose of responsibility before being given routine access to firearms.

Dropping like flies ...

The older I get, the more I notice that artists I grew up with are dying.

Gerry Rafferty, RIP.

Yes, he was a pop singer, and I'm more of a metal kind of guy, but in my opinion, the lead break on 'Baker Street' is one if the nicest, most appropriate that have ever been recorded.

Futility

The wife got the mail yesterday, and told me that my NRA membership card came ....

NRA membership card?!

Me - "Honey, someone has played an exceptionally cruel joke by signing me up for the NRA."
She - "Well, there it is ... it says 'Your new NRA membership card'."
Me - "Ah, here's my membership card if I send them $35!"
She - "oh"

The NRA have been calling me in the last couple of months to let me listen to Wayne LaPierre's very important messages. I tell the nice lady that I have no interest in listening to anything Mr LaPierre has to say at this time, so don't bother and have a nice day.

I still haven't figured out how they got my number. But I'll play their little game.

You know, the NRA are soooo effective, states like MA and NY still have the most restrictive gun laws in the country. But finally, someone is suing MA for their 'we might' issue for ownership of a firearm laws.

And you guessed it ... it's not the NRA.

But keep wasting postage and plastic fake membership cards and paper sending me your appeals to my patriotism to join ... I'll keep throwing them away. Don't call me, I'll call you.

An interesting read ...

So the research isn't as true as we thought:

If replication is what separates the rigor of science from the squishiness of pseudoscience, where do we put all these rigorously validated findings that can no longer be proved? Which results should we believe? Francis Bacon, the early-modern philosopher and pioneer of the scientific method, once declared that experiments were essential, because they allowed us to “put nature to the question.” But it appears that nature often gives us different answers.

This article goes on about much more weighty subjects, and is interesting for that alone.

But it begs the question: What about all of these AGW experiments in which the scientists actively hide their procedures, and won't let anyone try to replicate the results? This article goes into much more than the willfulness of AGW cheerleaders, including the realization that there are unknown things that affect experiments, even when researchers try to correct for them.

Popgun does us all a kindness ...

... by taking Dr Holda (president of Kilgore College in TX) shooting:

Dr. Holda seems to be open to actually learning about this subject, so I invited him to let me take him to the range and show him the basics.

So, today was the day we went to the range, and I met Dr. Holda and his wife Scotti face to face for the first time. Friends, these are some nice folks; polite, well spoken, and by all indications willing to learn. Neither had ever even held a handgun, much less shot one.

Now this is the sign of a real man; one who will say he may be wrong, and learn what's what.

Kudo's to Dr Holda and his wife for going outside the box.

And mega-kudo's to Popgun for opening the door!

Religion of peace and tolerance

Alive and well in Spain:

The teacher was giving a normal lesson about the different climates on our planet, and he used the locality of TrevĂ©lez as example of a cold and dry climate. For an anecdote, the teacher explained that precisely this climate was best for the curing of hams. Then the student demanded of the teacher, “Don’t speak about hams,” because this subject was offensive for him as he is a moslem.

Now what the school system should have done when the parents complained is to have calmly apologized that their little schnookums got offended, but the climate in question is conducive to curing hams (an objective fact), and if they don't want to eat ham ....... don't.

And if they keep complaining, just let them know that the potential for further 'offense' is almost limitless.

It really pays ...

... to be in a union:

In 1997 a Brooklyn teacher was accused of attempting to molest a sixth-grade girl at PS 138. As it happened, he admitted the behavior, but no criminal charges were filed when all was said and done. Still one would think the fact that he inappropriately fondled a teen should be enough to get him fired from his teaching position. But then again, in New York you can't even fire a child molester if he happens to be a teachers union member.

I know stories like this are old hat, just thought a reminder for the new year would be appropriate.
