Hoover free market?

I recently read Murray Rothbard's America's Great Depression for a blogger-guided study. If you're interested, you can go through it yourself here.

I also read about a study by two UCLA economics professors who concluded that all the government action to solve the Great Depression actually made it worse and last longer than it should have. One of those economists, Lee Ohanian has written another paper to show who's to blame (though Hoover didn't do it all himself).

Read.

Breda's admonition to carry the right tool is one that we should all take to heart.

Man carries gun into restaurant - thankfully, no one injured.

Had lunch (while armed) at a local eatery today .......

My firearms still haven't killed anyone.

pm

Is this a good enough reason?

I'm wondering ....

I live in a rural area - nice, quiet, occasional gunfire but out here, that's pretty normal. I barely notice it anymore.

Lately, my wife has kept me abreast of a rash of thefts, break-ins and such, that are really out of the ordinary for this area. We've seen a couple of strange dogs around - they didn't cause any trouble, but my wife was bitten while jogging.

Now news of an older couple killed, best the authorities can tell, by a pack of dogs.

And the wife can't understand why I carry all the time?

Guns, guns, everywhere!

Update: Arizona Shooting has more information about the demonstrators carrying - all anti-Obama types. But they did the right thing by alerting law enforcement prior to going.

Another sighting of a firearm at a presidential rally today, but this time it was an Evil Black Rifle. Take a look ....... it is CNN, and Rick Sanchez at that, but he doesn't go too far off the reservation.

I'm going to part company with what seems to be a majority of my gunnie brethren, and ask 'What's the big deal? You know, journalists may not be firearms knowlegable, but then again, journalists don't represent much of the population.

And some gun bloggers think that while you do have the right to carry, maybe you shouldn't, 'cuz you might scare the white people. I think you should ... the more gun owners that are seen carrying, even though the general public might think it's stooopid, the better off we are.

And in this clip, the best I can tell is that both sides of the debate were armed, and no one got shot.

An armed society is a polite society .... indeed!

pm

The New York shopkeeper who defended himself and a couple of employees notes how he didn't want to shoot anyone.

No one who carries does ...... we carry not to find trouble, we carry in case we run into trouble.

Happily, Mr Augusto kept shooting until the danger was gone.

pm

My head hurts ......

The recent talk about 'death panels' in relation to health care reform has brought to mind something in the distant past (distant in 'modern' terms) - the Base Closure and Realignment Commission. Alert Americans will remember the BRAC - a way to cash-in the 'peace dividend'. So how does that relate to the 'death panels'?

Barack Obama spoke to David Leonhardt of the New York Times (back in April of this year) about a great many things, one of which was health care reform. In the interview, the president had this to say (referring his elderly grandmother):

"So that’s where I think you just get into some very difficult moral issues. But that’s also a huge driver of cost, right?

I mean, the chronically ill and those toward the end of their lives are accounting for potentially 80 percent of the total health care bill out here."

When asked what to do about the problem, he replied:

"Well, I think that there is going to have to be a conversation that is guided by doctors, scientists, ethicists. And then there is going to have to be a very difficult democratic conversation that takes place. It is very difficult to imagine the country making those decisions just through the normal political channels. And that’s part of why you have to have some independent group that can give you guidance. It’s not determinative, but I think has to be able to give you some guidance. And that’s part of what I suspect you’ll see emerging out of the various health care conversations that are taking place on the Hill right now."

Imagine, if you will, the country making medical decisions through a political process, rather than consulting with doctors. Does that sound good? Doesn't to me, either. But if I did have to call my representative, I would think he'd be for my enhanced medical care, because if he denied it, I might not be inclined to vote for him next election (if I made it that long).

Not a good solution.

Enter the Death Panel. But lets not call it that ..... too mean, too vicious. Lets call it ..... I don't know ... how about ...... Federal Coordinating Council for Comparative Effectiveness Research. That's much nicer. And government-sounding. But we all know it's the government word for death panel. And it's here that all the 'tough' decisions get made regarding health care.

This is where BRAC comes in. Remember what BRAC was for? BRAC was the mechanism by which the military was going to return the peace dividend to the country by closing now-unneeded bases. BRAC was also the mechanism to defeat politicians' desire to close the other guy's bases, not the bases in my district (because, well, hell .... he might lose votes!). BRAC presented a slate of bases for closure, and if approved by a senate subcommittee, would go to the full senate for an up-or-down vote ..... no cherry picking your pet military base.

So money was saved .... the Peace Dividend. Bases closed ...... money saved. A commission ..... bases closed .... money saved. Commission ...... money saved.

How is the Federal Coordinating Council for Comparative Effectiveness Research going to save money? By limiting, ultimately, the amount of health care that is paid for by the government. Oh, it won't be pulling the plug on grandma at first. All it will do is "give clinicians and patients valid information to make decisions that will improve the performance of the U.S. health care system." But slowly, surely, the government will start to nudge physicians not to do that procedure, or don't prescribe that drug, because they're not comparatively effective, or they don't add enough productive life-years, or make a complete life more likely. Because they don't improve the performance of the health care system.

But President Obama said that the commission guidance wouldn't be "determinative"! Then what good are its' recommendations, if they're not going to encourage doctors to follow them (and trust me, the federal government has all sorts of ways to encourage folks)? Well, that's the $1 trillion question, isn't it?!

The government will ration health care more and more (they do it now, just like the insurance companies do) in order to cover more Americans (and illegals, too?). And the more Americans that the government covers, the more rationing that will occur (and covering more Americans is the point of the public option plans).

A reform of the health care payment system cannot be accomplished in a few weeks ...... I imagine it could take the better part of a presidents' term, to be done right.

But it won't be done right.

It never is ........

The affliction ......

Ah, The Affliction ........ so we come to it at last.

I have Multiple Sclerosis.

See, that wasn't so bad. I was diagnosed a little over two years ago. The symptoms that caused the diagnosis: had a sudden numbness in my left arm left side, and down the left leg. Emergency room visit ruled out a heart attack or stroke. An MRI, lumbar puncture, and a neurology visit confirmed it .... MS.

And now, since I've been laid off, the job prospects look slim. I've taken a couple of neurological exams, including one for social security benefits ..... not sure what deficiencies they show, but I know there are some. Right now, my left arm and hand just aren't right. Can't 'feel' things, but I'm more sensitive to pain ... go figure. Balance is affected, gait has been affected. Fatigue issues .... heat makes it worse, so this time of year is the worst.

But the really annoying thing the cognitive deficiency. I have ephasia, pretty bad. I can think things through reasonably well, just can't get them out of my brain through my mouth. I have noticed a lessened ability to think critically; that's why I follow a couple of the blogs I do (for the practice). My therapist (TLS) says that even though I feel the deficiencies, I'm waaaaaaaay ahead of the average Joe, so that's something to keep in mind.

If you follow this blog (anyone?!) you may notice that my posts seem to incomplete, or ramble ...... it's probably the MS talking.

And no need for sympathy .... it is what it is. I'm dealing with it.

What?! No death and destruction?

Kevin over at Smallest Minority has yet another post about the non-issue of firearms in public (he's in AZ).

I served in the Marine Corps with a fellow from AZ (Pleasant Valley), and he told me stories of working with the sheriff's department the summer before he went to boot camp, open-carrying the whole time.

I also noted that when TN allowed permit-holders to carry in restaurants that serve alcohol, several TN bloggers were initially keeping a running tally of how many times armed individuals carried in said restaurants, with absolutely nothing happening.

Here in GA, there is still some confusion about open carry for GFL holders, and some unofficial opinions from the attornety general that it's legal (how can an attorney general opinion be 'unofficial'?).

I'll keep my eyes and ears open ........

Need a little help .....

Help!

I've grown weary of the local news habit of referring to allowing holders of concealed carry permits to 'allowing guns'.

TN is now in the throes of having municipalities 'opting out' of the new law that allows ccw permit holders to carry in local parks. However, the local news media consistently says that the TN legislature has voted to 'allow guns' in local and state parks, and I just don't think this is a fair or accurate description.

Help me come up with a term that accurately describes a permit holder, and that flows trippingly from the tongue ..........

TIA

pm

Update: something like this ..... instead of 'the legislature has passed a law allowing guns in parks', how about 'the legislature has passed a law allowing licensed permit-holders to carry weapons in parks'.

Am I making sense?

I've read some if my posts, and they don't make the kind of sense I'd like. Bear with me ...... that's part of why I'm doing this, to get better at it. I'll explain more later.

pm

Persecuted?

Journaling post.

Last night, the wife and I were discussing some carry issues. I have a permit to carry (it gives me a couple of other benefits), and I have been carrying for about a month .... around the house, the yard ..... on the few errands I run. My wife told me a few days ago about some thievery going on in our immediate area. We live in a rural area, and most of the problems have been of the I-left-my-weedeater-out-and-someone-got-it variety, but some have been broad daylight break-ins. We've also been warned about dogs ...... we've seen a couple, but nothing that's presented a problem so far. Still, I'm wary, especially when I take our 5-year old out to play.

So my wife's telling me all this, and I mention that I've been carrying ..... she was NOT happy. I'll admit that my communication skills are not the best, not to mention the problems I have with The Affliction (we're seeing a therapist for that ...... she recommended journaling), and this isn't the first time we've had disagreements about firearms. I didn't tell her that I had ordered my FAL, and though I seem to remember telling her I was looking for a handgun, I didn't specifically tell her that I'd found one.

Now, the males in the audience will note that I bought a handgun, and obtained a concealed carry permit ............... hmmmmmm, I wonder what he's got planned?!

Now I'll readily admit that my wife is much smarter than I am, but even though she's a girl, I figgered she'd understand what I intended. And this is not the first time in my life I've carried ..... I carried (illegally) in TN as a restaurant manager, taking deposits to the bank. At one point in my life, I held a federal firearms license (FFL). The therapist (I'll call her The Lesser Spirit, or TLS) has noted that as a former Marine, I'm wired this way, and that I probably have legitimate concerns, both in the specific and the general. And I've tried to follow her suggestions ........

So why do I still feel persecuted?

pm

Please - unknot those panties!

Say Uncle has a note about yet another pack of bed-wetters in TN who are scared of those awful armed citizens.

Now, Tennessee has some requirements to get a concealed carry permit: gotta be 21; can't be a felon; have to take a safety course (cost varies); have to pay money ($115 to state); have to get fingerprinted and have a background check run.

Down in Georgia, you gotta pay a nominal fee ($65), and get fingerprinted and have a background check run. The parks-carry stuation is the same mish-mash that TN is going to have. Some of the cities that do NOT restrict carry in parks in GA are close to me, and I haven't heard of anything happening.

TN also just allowed concealed carry in restaurants that serve alcohol ..... GA has allowed that for over a year, and not a single incident has arisen because of it.

What has the NRA done about this?

It's been 3 yrs since my last confe ........

So, do I have a different calender than everyone else?!

It has been a long time since I posted, and there's been a lot happening (besides the election). I've joined the ever-growing ranks of the unemployed .... no luck so far finding a new job. The extra time with my wife has shown that The Affliction is worse than we thought, so we've taken steps on that front.

And my reasons for this blog have ....... evolved. I think it will be some introspection, journaling, plus my take on things political (and with Obama in office, shouldn't be any lack of fodder). I'll see how it goes.

Well, that''s it for now ........ aren't you glad you stopped by?!
