That piece I reported about a restaurant owner in Marysville, Indiana who smoked a goblin with a cylinder−full of 357s without result, has been criticized by a couple of correspondents as being unbelievable. Interestingly enough, my friend just called the other night to ask me some more questions about the kind of weapon he should use to protect his establishment. I told him that people had been expressing doubts about his story and he said that all they had to do was to check with the records of the Marysville Police Department. Among other things, his story was so bizarre that I couldn't possibly have invented it myself − nor could he. - Jeff Cooper

Taxes, taxes, and more taxes

Americans for Tax Reform has looked at the 'new' house version health care payment by someone else reform bill (HR 3962, still over 1950 pgs) and found ..... wait for it .... more and more taxes, and not just on the 'wealthy'.

Read the whole list ..... and then the comments.

I'll pull just one comment from the article:
We have 14 employees in our business with a payroll of about $500,000. The cost of providing insurance for all of them is about $51,000 a year. If we opt not to insure them we would pay an excise tax of 2% of $500,000. In other words $10,000. We could save $41,000 by not insuring them. We won't do that to our employees but there are plenty that will and who knows about us if things get really tight. So off they go to the "public option". "If you are happy with your insurance right now you can keep it ..." yeah, right, provided your employer doesn't dump you into the public option.

Fudged numbers

Stolen from Ace (since I can't achieve his level of analysis), this piece on just how fucked up Obama's stimulus numbers are:

So, if a factory gets $5000, and divides that, $50 a worker, among 100 workers, you know how many jobs were "saved or created" according to Obama?

100. Even though $5000 obviously doesn't cover a single part-time salary, let alone 100 full-time salaries.

If a factory gets $5000, and divides that, $1 a worker, among 5000 workers, Obama's rules say 5000 jobs were saved or created.

And note that in neither case does the employee have to be a new one. It could be a guy working there for 30 years, whom the company would never even consider firing. Per the rules, if he gets 50 bucks, or even a single dollar, his job was right there "saved" by Bonny Prince Barack.

How's that for creative accounting ..... and with only a few hundred billion of your dollars.

Dear God, 2012 can't come soon enough.

Interesting hypothesis

Brainstorm: what if Republicans were to withdraw from a series of hot Congressional races and run as conservative independents a la #ny23?
Hmmmm ...... this may be a good idea. Read the whole thing, especially his point about the general disgust at both major parties.

One thing's for sure ..... if either party tries this, it will only work one time. That is, until the public finds out you weren't really conservative.

In connection with the numerous incidents with American deer over the past year, we note that one Mr. Popeye Golossi was recently run over by a herd of kudu not far from Port Elizabeth, suffering bruised ribs, bruises to face and head and some loose teeth. The following illuminating epistle was prepared by one Raymond Bonner and passed along to us by George Mandes. You might keep it at the ready for any situation when you may run into a hunter−hater:
"From a conservation perspective it can be argued that hunting should be promoted over tourism. While researching a book on conservation in Africa, I discovered that ecologically tourists do more damage than hunters, and not because there are so many more of the camera clickers. They speed across the plains in their minivans tearing up the grass, creating dust bowls and cutting ugly ruts. Then they surround a lion pride or rhino, reducing the animals to fright, boredom or what sometimes seems like tears. In effect, man−as−tourist is taking the "wild" out of the wildlife of Africa."

Like I said ...... wow.

Media malfeasance?

Maybe.

Uncle has the link:
Federal investigative documents obtained by News 8 have revealed the details behind extensive gun smuggling from the Dallas-Fort Worth area to drug gangs in Mexico.

Interesting how this fits with the anti-gun narrative. But I'm told that the video at the link has information that's not in the print version, namely that it was gun show employees who alerted the Feds. Also note that there's no mention of whether the sales themselves were illegal.

I'm also wondering about the apparent lack of urgency:

A confidential informant inside the operation told investigators told of one single man hauling 30 to 50 firearms to Mexico every week for months.

Well, do they want to stop the flow of firearms or not.

Seems to me that firearms peeps are doing their part; it'd be nice to see it recognized.

Last year I received a most interesting letter from an Irish mercenary in Croatia discussing the situation in that land. He said he found the work fascinating, the country beautiful, and the people charming. He noted that while the English language was not common amongst the men, all the girls he met seemed quite fluent. Mostly, of course, these were militia−types. He could not give me a return address because he naturally did not know where he would be, but just this last week I got another letter from him in Ireland, whither he hadgone at the expiration of his contract. The soldier home from the wars clearly wanted a bit of rest and recreation in his green and pleasant homeland, but it was not to be. He discovered at once that one cannot breath free In the UK nor in Ireland. In effect, personal weapons are outlawed and a man who is any sort of a man cannot live without his personal weapons. After going the rounds at great length attempting to obtain a 6mm rifle for deer stalking, our correspondent has about given up. He intends now to emigrate to Israel. The situation in Israel may not be of the best − especially for a goy, but at least in Israel one is permitted and encouraged to fight back. Israel may be a lock−step theocracy where one must speak Hebrew, but at least one is permitted to fight back and that, in the last analysis, is the absolute measure of liberty.

Certainly we live in "interesting times." - Jeff Cooper

A while back I queried the family about the origin of that quotation, "I speak of Africa and golden joys," with which Theodore Roosevelt opens his classic work on African hunting. It was gratifying to receive a whole sock−full of answers from readers of these pages. It turns out that line comes from Henry IV by Shakespeare and is attributed to one "Ancient Pistol." Curiously, the statement has nothing to do with the "golden joys" that Roosevelt was talking about, but TR certainly picked the right statement for the right place. - Jeff Cooper

energy density

Saw this on Ace's headlines space (on the left-hand side). It's an essay which explains energy production in terms of the physics, and using fairly small words. It's a technical explaination of things that are intuitive to thinking adults.

I've toyed with the idea of renewable energy, mainly for self-sufficiency reasons, and I can tell you right now that even with government subsidies, it's not anywhere close to being ready for prime time (let alone serving any large-scale power needs).

For example, I live on top of a mountain, and the wind blows fairly strong up here (though not at all 'all the time') when it blows, so you'd think that a wind turbine would be ideal. I looked at my power bill, figured out what my average monthly usage was, and priced a turbine to meet that need. The result?

$80,000 just for the turbine! That doesn't include the monster pole to put it on, nor the installation. How long do you think the warranty is on such a high dollar piece of gear?

5 years .......... 5 years!

At my current electric rate, I won't live long enough to recover the cost of the turbine, that's if it never fails and if the wind blows 24/7!

Yeah, I like the idea of renewable energy ........ for my money, give me a personal nuclear reactor any day!

[This is the 300 Whisper round - didn't know it had been around this long! pm]

J.D. Jones, the prominent advocate of pistol hunting, dropped by the other day to show us a most curious ballistic development. He has taken the 223 case, blown it out to 30 caliber and installed a match bullet inside which takes up practically the entire case. A pinch of the proper powder pushes this bullet out the muzzle at subsonic velocities, thus permitting silent fire. There have been similar endeavors in the past, one of which I developed myself, but this one is unusual in that it is adapted to the M16 rifle, hence the finished cartridge
will work through the magazine system of the M16. J.D. assures me that when the piece is fitted with the proper noise suppresser, a full magazine of 30 rounds may be sprayed out the muzzle, with good short range efficiency in dead silence. I am not clear about the tactical niche of silent full auto fire, but there it is, if you want it. It sounds like the sort of thing the BATmen would be Interested in. - Jeff Cooper

Enforce the 10th, or repeal the 17th?

WND has this interesting report on the efforts of at least one state to rein in the federal government:
"The national government has become a complex system of programs whose purposes lie outside of the responsibilities of the enumerated powers and of securing our natural rights; programs that benefit some while others must pay,"

I applaud the sentiment, but I believe the effort's misplaced.

As originally intended, the constitution set three branches of goverment, designed to be checks and balances against one another (even within the legislative branch). The representatives were to be directly elected (to represent the people), with the senators to be chosen by the state legislatures to represent the interests of the states (to prevent such tripe as unfunded mandates). As usual, humans involved in any governmental scheme will abuse the power, once they figure out how to game the system ..... and they did. A civil war and the subsequent re-unification didn't help things a bit.

So the 17th amendment was passed, ostensibly to remove the selection of senators from the corrupt state legislatures, and placed it in the hands of the people (who never, ever are corrupt!). So what happened?

People found out that you could take from Peter to pay Paul. And we lived happily ever after ..... except we really haven't.

So now there are moves afoot to assert states' rights under the 10th amendment. It's my opinion that states should go a little further, and start a movement to repeal the 17th.

NY-23 update ...

Seems like the fat lady is warming up. Ace has this post detailing the mountain of support that is turning into a crater, and adds to the chorus of conservatives calling for Scozzafava to withdraw.

Now, why would a Republican who's not only more left than the constituency, but more left than the Democrat; who challenged her opponent to debates at his headquarters (with the predictable PR debacle); and whose husband called the police after a reporter (with impeccable credentials, btw) questioned her about her stand on the issues (note to Dede - that's what reporters do) withdraw from a political race?! That's just crazy talk!

I haven't seen the poll numbers recently, but the GOP needs to take a look at the bigger picture. If they don't encourage Ms Scozzafava to withdraw, the Democrat will win (maybe). The best thing that can happen is a Dem win; the worst is for Hoffman to beat both opponents in a three-way race and have the GOP repudiated in a safely red district.

No matter what happens, the GOP county chairmen who picked this bimbo should throw themselves on their swords and resign immediately after the election. It's past time that the rank-and-file took the party back.

Ok, Republicans may not be idiots, but they're not that smart

So the special election in NY district 23 is heating up. Dede Scozzafava (RINO) is running against Bill Owens (D) for the seat. Scozzafava has been endorsed by the NRCC and the GOP elite, but they've ignored the actual conservative in the race, Doug Hoffman.

There are many op-eds and strategems afloat about the tactical mistake this is, Mark Steyn has but one:
...Washington doesn't need another incoherent buffoon insulated by a phalanx of thin-skinned twerps already guarding her like a 30-year incumbent for whom routine questions are an outrageous form of lèse-majesté. By any reasonable measure, this candidate is unworthy of a seat in the national legislature.
And all of this drama in a safe Republican district.

Yet another reason why I don't enthusiastically support the Republican party any more.

UPDATED: Ace of Spades also quoted this interview with a Republican party county chair:
Joseph adamantly refused to call for Scozzafava to withdraw from the race. "That would just be affirming Conservative Party Chariman Mike Long's position. What are we going to do? Let him tell us who we should nominate?"

No, its not legalization ... but

From many sources, the news that the Obama administration will not waste effort in trying to apprehend individuals for medical marijuana possession in states which allow it. Vox Day has the best take on it that I can see.

I've learned who to look to for certain things, and who to avoid. For example, Hot Air commenters tend to be more 'Republican', law-and-order types (no matter if the particular law is dumb or not); Ace of Spades commenters tend to be more libertarian. I've tended more toward anarchy than anything lately, simply because I just want to be left alone.

Oh yeah, back to pot. I've privately (to my wife) indicated that what will start the ball rolling on drug legalization is for some sheriff somewhere to run on a platform that includes not arresting citizens for simple possesion of marijuana. Of course, I never thought that the DoJ would be tha first sheriff, but as Vox said, credit where it's due.

Here's an interesting quote from G.K. Chesterton:
"The truth is, of course, that the curtness of the Ten Commandments is an evidence, not of the gloom and narrowness of a religion, but, on the contrary, of its liberality and humanity. It is shorter to state the things forbidden than the things permitted: precisely because most things are permitted, and only a few things are forbidden."
Why is marijuana illegal in the first place, when it was legal up until the late 1930's? Is the damage done by illegal marijuana any greater than that done by drunkeness from legal alcohol? What about tobacco smoke? What about prescription drug abuse?

Fact is, very little to nothing should be illegal, except acts that deprive another of life or property (basically what the 10 commandments proscribe). Curtness, indeed.

This country was founded by individuals who only desired to be free. They wanted freedom.

More laws = less freedom.

Liberty is offensive

This post (via WND) shows how some (most?) people in authority react to unpleasantness.

The same thing is evident in 'zero tolerance'policies in schools.

Which is why the 'liberty is an offensive lifestyle' quote at Kevin's is so true. Instead of allowing some people to be offended, we attempt to deny everyone the opportunity to offend. That's impossible. Like this ......

I am a former Marine (and former restaurant employee!), so there's not much you can say that will offend me. So even if you try to offend me, I won't be offended. But if I go about my day around milquetoast panty-waists, I'm sure that there's something that I'll do that will offend, even though none was intended.

"The society of late twentieth century America is perhaps the first in human history where most grown men do not routinely bear arms on their persons and boys are not regularly raised from childhood to learn skill in the use of some kind of weapon, either for community or personal defense − club or spear, broadsword or long bow, rifle or Bowie knife. It also happens to be one of the rudest and crudest societies in history, having jubilantly swept most of the etiquette of speech, table, dress, hospitality, fairness, deference to authority and the relations of male and female and child and elder under the fraying and filthy carpet of politically convenient illusions. With little fear of physical reprisal Americans can be as loud, gross, disrespectful, pushy, and negligent as they please. If more people carried rapiers at their belts, or revolvers on their hips, It is a fair bet you would be able to go to a movie and enjoy he dialogue from the screen without having to endure the small talk, family gossip and assorted bodily noises that many theater audiences these days regularly emit. Today, discourtesy is commonplace precisely because there is no price to pay for it."

About today's Cooper QotD

Today's Cooper Qotd is about the common (dare I say, intentional?!) misconception that full-auto weapons are the weapons that criminals prefer.

Automatic weapons are a military invention that civilians (and criminals) have used. In military use, automatic weapons can certainly kill you, but that's not necessarily how they're employed.

Automatic weapons (machine guns, if you will) a generally used for suppressive fire, that is to keep the bad guy's heads down. Now, this is accomplished by the threat of being hit by a bullet, and gunners do indeed aim at the bad guys, but no one expects them to get hits. While machine gunners are suppressing enemy activity, the rest of the squad maneuvers to where they can kill the bad guys, probably with assault weapons, which are intended to be fired in short bursts (if at all ... M16A2's and variants have a 3-rd burst capability to limit the waste of ammo).

Skilled machine gunners can use their weapons in a stand-alone role for very short periods of time, but they are better utilized as crew-served weapons (as they were intended, the SAW being the notable exception).

And skilled civilians can accurately shoot full-auto weapons .... note I said skilled (meaning having a lot of practice, or well-regulated!). Criminals are rarely skilled (notable exception). Bad thing about bullets is that once they're gone, you can't call them back, and that't the sledgehammer that the anti-firearms crowd use to keep them highly regulated.

pm

Cooper QotD

I suppose nothing can be done about the erroneous assumption that hand held fully automatic fire is somehow more efficient than aimed fire. As I used to demonstrate, when I had a teaching job, quick semi−automatic fire is far more likely to produce results than bursts. Thus the preoccupation of the Feds with the idea that is it somehow an offense against God and man to convert a semi−automatic weapon to a fully automatic capacity is simply a manifestation of ignorance. If a man is shooting at me, I would much prefer that he were on full
auto than carefully holding and squeezing. The automatic option is the greatest encourager of the spray−and−pray technique, which I have long done my best to discourage. - Jeff Cooper

Liberal Progressive integrity

Vox Day sends us this take on the recent Rush Limbaugh/NFL kerfluffle:

The man owes Limbaugh an unmitigated apology as does the NFL commissioner, Smith from the NFLPA, and a whole host of other media lefties who mindlessly leaped to the attack and in doing so shredded their false claims to objectivity. I rather hope Rush does as Florio originally suggested and follows through in suing those who slandered him.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I learned from Bill Buckley's National Review that a new technique that store owners are using to cleanse the atmosphere is the broadcast of good music at high decibel levels. It appears the Brandenburg Concertos at full blast are quite sure to keep the scene free of street people. - Jeff Cooper

And this takes the cake

From David comes this update on the Arambula shooting (previously here and here); the officer was cleared of wrongdoing.

Now, I have a few LE buddies; served in the Marine Corps with even more, so I'll grant them that they have a job I wouldn't do. But the doctors who fixed this guy up say that he was shot in the back, and at least two shots appear to have come while he was on the ground.

I don't know how anyone, LEO or citizen can figure that shooting a man in the back, while he's on the ground is A-OK?

Does anyone not understand why many folks think that we're at the end, if not of the world, at least of this country ?

Perhaps you have noticed the warning from SIGARMS which insists that the hammer on the Sig must always be dropped by the decocking device and never by the thumb. This is curious in view of the fact that for many years the Walther people always recommended that the weapon be decocked with the thumb and not with the hammer dropper. This is still more evidence of a world in which we are to depend on machinery rather than upon ourselves. Dropping the hammer with a decocker is usually safe. (Just be sure the weapon is pointed in a safe direction when you do it.) Lowering the hammer with the thumb is always safe if the operator is safe. Of course, if you must assume that the operator is inept, then decocking with the thumb is not safe.

We dinosaurs prefer to put our trust in our own abilities rather than in any reliability of a mechanism which can fail. - Jeff Cooper

Time to crack the whip?

Via Hot Air comes this news opinion piece:

It’s time to stop Olympia’s lies, to her constituents, her colleagues, and herself and make her be what we all know she really is – a Democrat. And the same goes for her twin sister, Susan Collins. And then Lindsey Graham after that.

I've often wondered when (or even if) the national GOP is going to put a stop to this failure to adhere to conservative principles (begging the question of whether or not the GOP is conservative any longer).

After all, Arlen Specter didn't hesitate to switch parties when it became clear that the Republicans would not re-elect him (so was he actually a Republican? No). So why not start putting pressure on some of these 'squishy' types?

Because the GOP is more interested in getting someone who claims to be a Republican in ofice ...... not to advance any type of conservative agenda.

You'd think that at least the GOP leadership in the senate would get Snowe off of any committees she serves on. Wouldn't that be nice.

Red state, blue state

From Ace of Spades comes this interesting blurb:
Link
They would create a public health insurer, the so-called "public option," but allow individual states to opt out if they wanted.

In other words: the blue states can have public health insurance, and the red states can go without.

And the details are the rub. The states that don't want to play only get to 'opt out' of the goodies ........ they'll still have to pay the taxes, accept the Medicare cuts, etc.

But here's an idea: let the federal government offer a service, like, universal health care .... and every state that wants it can just pay the new taxes, and get their Medicare cut, etc to pay for that service.

Reckon there'd be any takers?

As time passes we discover that there are a good many readers who have not been to school and who are puzzled by our reference to "The Mozambique Drill."
I added The Mozambique Drill to the modern doctrine after hearing of an experience of a student of mine up in Mozambique when that country was abandoned. My friend was involved in the fighting that took place around the airport of Laurenco Marquez. At one point, Mike turned a corner was confronted by a terrorist carrying an AK47. The man was advancing toward him at a walk at a range of perhaps 10 paces. Mike, who was a good shot, came up with his P35 and planted two satisfactory hits, one on each side of the wishbone. He expected his adversary to drop, but nothing happened, and the man continued to close the range. At this point, our boy quite sensibly opted to go for the head and tried to do so, but he was a little bit upset by this time and
mashed slightly on the trigger, catching the terrorist precisely between the collar bones and severing his spinal cord. This stopped the fight. Upon analysis, it seemed to me that the pistolero should be accustomed to the idea of placing two shots amidships as fast as he can and then being prepared to change his point of aim if this achieves no results. Two shots amidships can be placed very quickly and very reliably and they will nearly always stop the fight providing a major−caliber pistol is used and the subject is not wearing body armor. However, simply chanting "two in the body, one in the head" oversimplifies matters, since it takes considerably longer to be absolutely sure of a head shot than it does to be quite sure of two shots in the thorax. The problem for the shooter is to change his pace, going just as fast as he can with his first pair, then, pausing to observe results or lack thereof, he must slow down and shoot precisely. This is not easy to do. The beginner tends to fire all three shots at the same speed, which is either too slow for the body shots or too fast for the head shot. This change of pace calls for concentration and coordination which can only be developed through practice.

Firearms ..... two view points

This is specifically about the open carry of firearms, but it illustrates the divergent views within the firearms community. One view is from Sebastian, the other is from Mike, and they concern an op-ed by Clayton Cramer in Shotgun News.

Sebastian feels that Cramer hits the nail on the head; Mike thinks that Cramer is lukewarm in hiws activism. While I can understand Sebastian's end, I don't much support his 'work-through-the-system-only' approach (doesn't mean we should forego the system). Mike is more at my speed on things firearm-related.

And maybe it's that I was in the Marine Corps, long known for being pretty black-or-white on issues. It's my opinion that the current firearms laws on the books are not in line with what the founding fathers intended for this country ... that's me. But even my wife thinks that an individual is compensating for the lack of something when he wants to carry a firearm openly.

But that individual is me. I have a concealed carry permit, and in my state that allows me to carry openly (as far as current interpretations of the law go). Now, I won't carry openly until I lose a little weight, so that I can dress in a reasonable manner (rather than shorts and a t-shirt). But my medical situation has made me think about this a lot.

I currently carry in a deep-concealment location (full-size Hi-power in a Smartcarry holster) ..... I can conceal it with almost all my wardrobe, but it is hard for me to present my handgun (because of the Affliction). So my thought is, why have to use my handgun in case of emergency, when I might be able to have the critters avoid me all together?

Maybe by openly carrying my handgun?

Wouldn't the bad guys look for easier pickings if they saw my handgun before? And what if the sight if my handgun made the bad guys pick a different establishment to rob? Could crime in general not be curtailed if there were citizens about, openly carrying firearms?

Now, as a libertarian thinker, I sometimes have to really work at letting other people live their lives. I live in a rural area, and it's not unusual to hear gunshots during the day, and sometimes at night. And even not knowing who they are, or where they're shooting, or how safe they're being, I have to tell myself that it's ok, that it's their right to do this.

And I know that if I were carrying, I know that I'd be safe and not call attention to myself and only use my power for good, not evil. And really, why should anyone care if I'm lawfully carrying my handgun openly? If I'm not using it for evil, right? And I wouldn't, of course, since I'm a law-abiding citizen; that's why I was issued the permit in the first place.

Why should I sacrifice my personal security for someone else's personal comfort?

I don't think I should.

While Sebastian makes the case against open carry and scaring the white folks, Mike makes the case that openly carrying firearms, besides giving bad guys pause, also gives politicians pause as well (and does so much better than I can). Sebastian apparently has faith in politicians ...... Mike typically does not, nor do I. Yes, I'm sure they're pretty good people outside of politics, but anytime you put a small group of people in charge of a country, bad things tend to happen.

So, can't we just get along? I don't think so ...... when one segment of the movement tells another that what they're doing is counter-productive, it's an implicit statment that one side is wrong, and needs to stop. The action might be counter-productive to what you're doing, but the action's supporters believe it to be a good thing, a result to be desired.

For a long time, the anti-firearms lobby ran rough-shod over firearms owners in this country; always pushing for tighter and stricter laws, and our 'leadership' would compromise. That only got us in worse shape, just slower than the anti-guns wanted. But in worse shape, none the less.

Why can't our efforts be synergistic? Why can't the pragmatic approach be strengthened by the specter of the 3 percenters? Why can't the threat of the 3 percenters be softened by the pragmatists? If compromise has to happen, let compromise start happening in our favor.

And that's another thing: just about every session of congress, there's some nutjob lefty floating the idea (or even sponsoring a bill) to repeal the 2nd amendment. So why the fuck is there no one on our side floating the idea to repeal the Gun Control Act, or the National Firearms Act. Why?

Because governments don't like to relinquish power once they've attained it ..... that's why our movement is at a snails pace.

Not because we open carried.

I feel .... unsettled

I'm in my 40's (close to 50's), and I suppose that if I had drugged and liquored-up a 13 year old, then vaginally and anally raped her, I'd feel pretty good.

If they caught me after 30+ years on the run, having plead guilty to a much lesser charge (yes, you're an idiot, Whoopi) but then split before my sentencing, I guess I'd feel unsettled.

I have in hand a pretty fascinating document from New York entitled "A Firearms Discharge Assault Report, 1991." It is so thick that tabulation is impractical but it is certainly interesting to note that the law enforcement
establishment seems to have forgotten about the use of sights, providing they ever knew about the use of sights. Again and again we have reports of shootings at ranges of 5 feet and under in which many shots were exchanged with no hits.

I suppose it must be accepted that the majority of people who opt for a job in law enforcement are not interested in marksmanship and only people who are interested in marksmanship can be counted on to hit what they shoot at. This is hard for me to accept. I can sympathize with Simon Bolivar, when on his death
bed, he sighed, "I have plowed the sea." - Jeff Cooper

Bloomberg's Follies

David had this post about Michael Bloomberg's latest anti-gun venture, hiring private investigators to infiltrate gun shows to show how eeeevil they are and how criminals, to the exclusion of all other sources, get their guns from illegal gun dealers in all sorts of illegal ways.

Funny how the Sharonville officials have had not had a single report of illegal activity, even having hosted the show for over 15 years.

So why didn't any of Bloomberg's goons alert law enforcement to any shenanigans? Well, seems that wasn't the goal ......

Forgive some of us if we suspect all the pots and pans Bloomberg is banging over out-of-state gun shows is more a matter of generating tons of free publicity, stoking his insufferable ego and imposing his will on all American gun owners, and less about combating violent crime in the Big Apple.

You see, gun control advocates really don't want to reduce crime (though they'll strenuously claim they do), they only want control. That's why Philadelphia won't actually enforce firearms laws on the books (that's too hard), instead wanting more and stricter firearms legislation that only the law-abiding will comply with (it's so much easier to get those illegal firearms).

Cautionary tale (w/update)

Meleanie Hain was found shot to death on Wednesday, along with her estranged husband, in what is an apparent murder-suicide. Her children were reported to be running down the street claiming 'Daddy shot Mommy!'.

Meleanie Hain, if you're not familiar with the name, is the women who caused quite a stir when she openly carried her handgun to her daughter's soccer game. Of course, the media reported mass hysteria, but the reality was that this was a common thing for her to do. She had a concealed carry permit, but as a Pennsylvania resident, she needed no permit to carry openly. Never the less, the police chief yanked her carry permit (which, ironically, left her with nothing but - open carry) without due cause, and a judge later returned it to her. She was in the process of sueing the police chief when she was killed.

She was interviewed at Gun Nuts Radio in January, and she appeared to be entirely rational. But as other bloggers have pointed out, just being armed isn't magic ...... it can only even the odds. There is no guarantee that you'll survive a defensive encounter.

Pray for the children.

She wound up shooting the owner in the process. I'm sure I'll see this later at The War on Guns.

Note that there are several great comments, but I notice somewhat of a trend. Most of the people who are pro-accountability suggest a return to the police academy and at the very least some marksmanship training.

But I don't think an individual who shoots an innocent citizen needs to be returned to their job ...... they should be fired, with all speed.

One of the confusing things about Obama's hesitancy about adding troops to Afghanistan is that many thought this was settled back in March when the Administration announced a comprehensive new strategy focusing on Counter Insurgency.

Turns out, Obama and his team had no clue what they were agreeing to at the time.

Last line of that post says it all - "criminal incompetence".

I've noticed that there are reports of morale in Afghanistan cratering. I can tell you from a combat veterans' standpoint, that a lack of information will crush your morale. If your commander-in-chief doesn't know what he wants to do, how the hell do the commanders communicate that to the troops?

Protein Wisdom has more:

He went on to say: “Waiting does not prolong a favorable outcome. This effort will not remain winnable indefinitely, and nor will public support.”

Now, you would think that at this level, and the fact that McChrystal just sent a detailed report to Obama, there would be nothing the general said that the White House doesn't already know.

And if the president's advisors think that McChrystal is naive, they better just hid in the bushes and watch.

How young is too young?

Nobody wants their child to get hurt.

That's a natural instinct that's most prevalent among moms and grandmothers. I don't want my children to get hurt either ..... but the 19 year-old i pretty much on his own now. The 5 year old, however I have to constantly guage my desire for her to learn about all sorts of things in life against my desire to not see her injured. I've heard it refered to as 'beneficent neglect'.

Several months ago, I pointed the wife to this video, of Gever Tully advising that there are at least 5 dangerous things you should let your kids do. I agree.

I've made no secret to my wife that as soon as she and I think she's ready, the little munchkin will be taught about firearms. I've already purchased a Daisy BB gun for her, but she knows that there are conditions to learning about it, namely, I have to be confident that she will do exactly as I tell her, when I tell her. She also has to be able to quote the 4 rules from memory and be able to explain them. When she can do this, we'll start her out .... but not until.
